Jets' lingering contrails bring N. Texas a flyby white Christmas

With imagination's help, contrails almost Bing's dream come true

Tuesday morning's weather was clear, but North Texans still got a white Christmas. All you had to do was look up.

An unusually large number of white, fluffy streaks painted the blue sky as jets made their rounds in the air.

The streaks, called contrails, are mostly water left behind in jet exhaust, and they typically freeze into ice crystals and evaporate when the air is dry. But weather conditions aligned Tuesday morning to make the contrails linger like Santa's sleigh trails.

Take a clear day, add chilly temperatures, high humidity at 30,000 feet and jet activity, and contrails will stay visible throughout the sky, meteorologists say.

"They hang around as man-made clouds," said Dan Shoemaker, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

At 30,000 feet, the temperature Tuesday morning was a frosty 63 degrees below zero – not unusual at that altitude. But the humidity was unusually high, "so really it was pretty saturated up there," Mr. Shoemaker said.

"When that atmosphere is moist, those contrails go out there, but they don't evaporate," he said.

By mid-afternoon, the ground temperature warmed into the low 60s, just about the time the contrails disappeared.

Visible jet contrails are more common in the winter because cold-weather storms pump moisture into the atmosphere without necessarily making clouds, Mr. Shoemaker said. Summer moisture brings thunderstorms that block the view of the contrails.

Lingering contrails generally have no impact on the weather, other than a slight drop in temperature if the streaks block the sun's rays.

Today's forecast is for another cold front that could bring light rain in the morning and afternoon, and clouds all day. Highs are predicted in the upper 40s, and wind gusts from the northwest could hit 20 mph.

Sunny skies are predicted to return Thursday, with an expected high in the low 50s
